The Importance of Dental Care for your Pets.
- Plaque and gingivitis allows periodic showering of bacteria into the blood stream.
- Broken teeth cause infection and decay of root canal with abscesses at the root tips. These abscesses are not visible, but cause pain. During dentistry, broken teeth with exposure of the pulp canal can be identified.
- Some animals have little tartar on their teeth, but severe gum infection with deep pockets.
Dentistry identifies and corrects many conditions that are dangerous to a pet’s health, but may not be obvious on a routine exam of the oral cavity while the pet is awake. Odor is a clue that something is wrong, but it is not always present.
Bacteria showering in to the blood stream can infect the heart valves. Dogs with murmurs and abnormal heart valves may be at increased risk.
Bacteria showering the kidneys and liver are also of concern. Often pets with dental problems experience significant pain, and owners do not realize this until their pet’s energy and attitude improve after treatment. (The owners thought the lethargy was of old age.)
Many potentially painful and dangerous conditions can be identified and corrected at the time of routine dentistry. Dentistry also prevents serious problems from developing in the first place.
