Acupuncture

We’ve all heard the term Acupuncture but what it is really? Acupuncture is an alternative medical therapy that originated in China thousands of years ago, but was not imported to the United States until the 1970’s. Believe it or not Acupuncture has been used for approximately 4500 years in animals, making it one of the oldest alternative medicines still used today. But how does it work? Referred to as the Gate Control Theory, the needle stimulates the local touch receptors sending a signal that then travels up the nerve into the spinal cord inhibiting signals which originate from adjacent pain receptors, thus reducing the pain experienced by the patient. This mechanism is the same that we employ by rubbing our shin after hitting it on the table- activating the touch receptors leads to a decrease in the pain we feel. And now that you’ve learned a bit about Acupuncture…did you know that here at Cherrydale we offer Acupuncture as one of our many options in our personalized and comprehensive approach to chronic pain, arthritis, back disease and many other neuromuscular diseases in our pets? That’s right, our very own Dr. Catbagan earned her certification in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture through Colorado State University in 2010. We’ve had many patients extend and enhance their quality of life by adding Acupuncture to their pain management plan. Our Doctors and staff are available to answer your questions and discuss Acupuncture or other therapies tailored to the needs of your four legged family member anytime.
